Prayer with pains, pains without prayers

Some good, old-fashioned, and puritan common sense from Thomas Chalmers, speaking about the relationship between working and praying in Christian ministry,

your pains without your prayers will positively do nothing in this way [of being productive and fruitful], though it must be confessed that prayers without pains are just as unproductive.
